the autumn song

つい一昨日まで半袖で平気やないか！と

半袖にハーパンで買い物などにでかけていたのだが、

なんだか人々の視線が痛い気がする。

見渡せばそんな格好をしているのは、自分くらい。

悪びれることもなく、今朝も物件探しの旅に半袖で出かける。

しまった。。。さ、寒い。。。
後で上着をとりにアパートに戻り、次の物件まで２０分ほど歩く。

ぬあああ。。。暑い！！！

Tokyo life

It has been almost two years since the last entry. I have a whole list of unfinished articles displayed on the same screen as I write this. The funny thing is that all of them start out with a same phrase "It has been over a blah blah blah months since..." So why start again? Well...isn't it in our nature to want to tell somebody when we are starting something new? Here I am in Tokyo!

いやあ、気がつけば最後のブログから二年近くたってしまいました。この記事を書くに至るまでにも、実は、今書いている記事と同じような出だしで始まるものを書きかけてはやめてといったことを何度も繰り返していたのですが、なぜでしょう、新境地に立たされるとつい文章を書きたくなってしまうのは。東京にいます！

BORDERLESS

I know many of you are back to school or work, but I hope everyone has had a quality time to refresh and relax!

ご挨拶が遅れてしまいましたが、新年あけましておめでとうございます。今年も宜しくお願いいたします。

This is a "gasshou" dwelling typical of Japan's two villages : Shirakawa in Gifu prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama prefecture. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage site. I have been to Shirakawa when I was in junior high school, but I only remembered this place as one of those places visited in a family trip. I knew it was famous and it did wow me even though I did not possess any architectural knowledge at the time. But I did not expect to come across this dwelling outside of Japan again.

これは知る人ぞ知る、岐阜県白川郷（高山市）と富山県の五箇山に建つ合掌造りです。UNESCOの世界遺産にも登録されています。中学生の時に白川郷に家族旅行で訪れた事が一度だけあります。有名であることはなんとなく知っていたし、なんの建築の知識もなかった中学生でもやはり感動した覚えはありますが、この合掌造り自体がスゴイ！というよりかは数ある家族旅行の中のひとつとして記憶の中にありました。なので、まさかその後も合掌造りに日本国外で出会うとは思ってもいませんでした。

This is a Trulli, a dwelling type which exists in a small commune named Alberobello in southern Italy. The reunion with "gasshou" dwelling was surprisingly at this small commune. Both Gokayama and Shirakawa Village are sister city of Alberobello. I knew they were sister cities, but I did not even care to think about how and why they became sister cities. On the last day at Alberobello I met the owner of the trulli my friend and I stayed at. He was the guy who first decided to make Alberobello and the two small villages in Japan sister cities.

これは南イタリアの小さなアルベロベッロという町に多く残っているトゥリッヒと呼ばれる家です。驚くことに合掌造りとはこの小さな町で２回目の再会を果たしました。白川郷と五箇山はアルベロベッロと姉妹都市です。この事はアルベロベッロを訪れる前から知ってはいたのですが、なぜ、どうやって姉妹都市になったのか改めて深く考える事はありませんでした。アルベロベッロを去るその日に自分たちが泊まっていたトゥリッヒの大家さんに会う機会がありました。実は彼こそが姉妹都市にすることを考案した張本人。

Then I found out from him that both trulli and gasshou dwelling originated from farming culture. Although they differ in materials and construction techniques they have much in common. It took six years from the first meeting until Alberobello and two villages in Japan officially became sister cities. In the process they visited each other and communicated to make much stronger connection. Something so far away from each other seems as if they have nothing in common, but it is up to us people to find and make that connection. 

トゥリッヒも合掌造りも元は農村の文化や習慣の中から生まれた物だと大家さんに教えてもらいました。材料も構造もまったく違うふたつですが、両方を比べてみると似たところが多々あることに気付かされました。大家さんが最初に白川郷に足を運んでから姉妹都市に認定されるまでには６年もの年月がかかったそうです。その間にどれだけ話し合い、お互いの事を学んだのでしょう。日本とイタリアというまったく違う土地になんの繋がりもないように思えますが、そこに繋がりを見出していくのが人と人の縁なのかもしれません。   

It is a difference between taking that first step or not and that one step is often the important and difficult one. I must appreciate those peoples who have been taking that step. They are the ones who motivates me. World is much smaller than I thought after traveling and realizing that people are making connection regardless of distance, difference in culture, habit, or language. This is another important thing I learned by being away from my hometown. 

なにか繋がりを見いだせるかもしれないと気づいてから一歩を踏み出すか踏み出さないかが大きい。そしてその一歩目は大切で同時に難しい。今までその一歩を踏み出してくれた人々がいれたからこそ気兼ねなく海外に行けるし、自分もいつかその一歩を踏み出そうと思わせてくれる。どんなに距離があっても、文化も、言葉も生活習慣が違ってもなんだかの繋がりを見出してきた事を改めて慣れた環境から離れてみて実感させられたのでした。
